Planetary Network - 2006/04/23 12:24 Extract from abstract:
... The concept of a bridge of flowers for Shanghai 2010 constitutes a unifying monument as part of the initial project, there is definitely a need to create an immaterial meeting place for this city that would be just as unifying at a time when the virtual world is in process of becoming part of everyday reality. This process is symbolised by the river, a state of flux, along which the city, not just the port, is being extended; that is the main point. Also, given that China has another monument of planetary dimensions, the only human construction that can been seen from space, how can we fail to evoke the Great Wall of China? Since this country does have such a monument, one that is classified as a national treasure by UNESCO, then, perhaps, it will be the first to make a different concept possible within the context of the World Expo, namely, an installation capable of producing a wholly spatial, not to say cosmic, dimension on earth? This dimension is part of the consciousness of “the planet's thinking layer” that was defined by Teilhard de Chardin, the Jesuit scientist who was exiled to China over a century ago. The internet is sometimes thought to be the incarnation of his “noosphere”. Since then, the conquest of space has definitely changed our way of seeing and inhabiting the universe. So, though the idea of linking several continents is today a reality thanks to communication systems and the internet, it is no easy matter applying this to an artistic creation. A two years ago, our AIT (Architecture, Image, Technology/2002, 2003, 2004) triptych in the heart of Paris was an attempt at imagining the basic requirements for a project involving several continents, between the cities of Paris and Los Angeles. Why not London, too. However, with a major partner such as China Mobile for Shanghai 2010, it is also possible to imagine how such an event would offer 50 million visitors from all over the world an orchestrated representation of an urban scene in a state of immaterial flux, that would travel through the fabric of the city, out to the entire planet ...
