Artists from around the world are in the Bay Area to develop new works with evolving technologies.

Skatesonic
Cobi von Tonder (South Africa)
Residency sponsored by IDEO and Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs, Montalvo Arts Center
FREE performance demonstration: Wednesday, August 9; 8-9:30pm at Park Side Plaza Skatesonic taps into skateboard culture, using the motions and sounds of skateboards to create music. In a way, each move translates to musical parameters and the rider ends up skating through a landscape of music (which s/he influences over time). There are going to be four boards, each board mapping to a unique sound and structural parameters, so the four riders will jam like a band.

Karaoke Ice
Nancy Nowacek, Katie Salen, Marina Zurkow (U.S.A.)
Residency commissioned by ZeroOne San Jose, San Jose State University, and The Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs at the Montalvo Arts Center.
The streets of San Jose will be transformed through flavor and song! Karaoke Ice is an ice cream truck-turned-mobilekaraoke-unit in which people are invited to sing and record a song for broadcast. Then their songs will fill the streets of San Jose as it makes its way from one festival location to another. Every day during ZeroOne San Jose at 12-1pm, the Karaoke Ice Battle will amuse and entertain audiences on the San Jose Museum of Art curbside.

DataNature and Cellular Noise Maker
Ben Hooker and Shona Kitchen (London, UK)
Produced in residence at Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs, Montalvo Arts Center
DataNature is a multi-site electronic artwork that reveals and celebrates the strange, secret beauty and interconnectedness of seemingly disparate natural and man-made aspects of Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport and its environs. The public will be invited to push a button on the DataNature "ticket machine" to receive a souvenir ticket. The dispensed ticket will superficially have the look and feel of a flight ticket/boarding card, but on closer inspection it features a montage of live and pre-collected images and stories from the Airport and its environs.

On Translation: Social Networks
Antoni Muntadas (New York, NY)
Produced in residence at Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs, Montalvo Arts Center
A collaboration led by Antoni Muntadas with students from CADRE - Vera Fainstein, Chris Head, Aaron Siegel, and Ethan Miller (coordinator for the project).
On Translation: Social Networks is an examination of the complex networks of economic, cultural, technological and military systems operating throughout the social fabric of the present day. The physical installation, intended for a public space, will consist of a world map that functions as both a sculptural installation on its own, and a substrate for a digital projection. Using the collected/analyzed text and the lat/lon data, the projection will consist of a dynamic, color-coded, subtly animated visualization. The project is intended to remain installed beyond the ISEA2006 Symposium, for a period of three to five years.

Fenestroscope (working title)
Ashok Sukumaran
Developed in collaboration with Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Menlo Park) using SunSpottm embedded technology.
Specially designed ‘scopes’ (without magnification) invite the audience to peer into designated windows at the Fairmont Hotel. Color-changing lights in the rooms will trigger a network of light events that travel along a path 200 metres long, resulting in a colored path from the windows to Cesar Chavez Park.

Thank you San Jose State University for co-sponsoring the ZeroOne San Jose/ISEA 2006 residencies!
