City of San Jose

From its founding in 1777 as California’s first city, San Jose has been a leader, driven by its spirit of innovation. That spirit is why San Jose is proud to be the host city, initiator and a core partner in the ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge. An important component of City’s economic and cultural strategy, ZeroOne San Jose further shows the world how San Jose is a creative community, a tech-savvy city and a global gateway. With an expected attendance of 50,000 people from the immediate region, nationally, and from 50 countries from around the world, the Festival synthesizes the San Jose’s technology sector and digital culture into a week-long event for all to enjoy and helps contribute to the City’s standing as the world’s leading center of innovation.

Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley

Founded in 1998, Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley is a nonprofit organization with a mission to advance the vitality of the Silicon Valley region through quality arts education in the schools, as well as broad cultural participation, and the development of an informed and committed leadership in the community. The organization’s first priority has been to initiate and support quality arts education in Santa Clara County public elementary schools through the Creative Education Program. To date, Cultural Initiatives has awarded over $3.9 million in cash grants and has provided over 7,600 hours of technical assistance to over 65,000 students attending 127 elementary schools in 19 school districts in Santa Clara County. Cultural Initiatives also conducts research to benchmark and monitor Silicon Valley’s cultural resources, and the levels of community engagement in the arts. Studies released in 2005 include The Creative Community Index, a unique study that explores how Silicon Valley residents engage in the arts and There’s Nothing Informal About It: Participatory Arts within the Cultural Ecology of Silicon Valley, by Maribel Alvarez, Ph.D. Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley also works to develop a cadre of community and business leaders committed to supporting the arts and culture in the region.

Montalvo Arts Center

Known for its literary, performing and visual arts programs, Montalvo Arts Center is proud to be a partner with ZeroOne for the 13th International Symposium on Electronic Arts Festival. Montalvo will present works prepared by 12 artists while in residence at its Lucas Artists Programs, including Antoni Muntadas and Ashok Sukamaran. Montalvo is hosting the only musical portion of the entire festival, the Bleeding Edge Festival which showcases 21 artists on four stages throughout the Montalvo grounds in Saratoga, California. Montalvo is also sponsoring a symposium on intellectual property, “Codes and Creativity,” at Santa Clara University, and will participate in the “C5 Quest for Success” urban game: a competition that tests participants’ analytical, management and decision-making skills, granting winning artists a variety of prizes, including a residency at Montalvo’s Lucas Artists Programs.

San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau

The city’s leading destination marketing organization, the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau (SJCVB) leads the City in welcoming ZeroOne’s renowned artists to a receptive arts audience and community, and to its arts venues and cultural facilities. The Bureau aims to ensure that the participating artists of ISEA2006 and the domestic and international visitors to this groundbreaking festival have an enjoyable and enlightening arts experience, as well as a positive and pleasant city experience. San Jose Museum of Art

As one of the gateway sites for ZeroOne San Jose, the San Jose Museum of Art will transform its new wing galleries into a showcase for digital art. Nine large-screen projections and interactive works by internationally acclaimed LA artist Jennifer Steinkamp await visitors to the Museum’s first floor galleries. Upstairs, Edge Conditions, an exhibition curated by Steve Dietz will highlight some of the most exciting and challenging contemporary art being created today including the crown jewel of this show and the Museum’s newest acquisition, Listening Post, a dynamic piece consisting of 231 mini-LCD screens that constantly cull live information from the Internet. Created in a unique collaboration between artist Ben Rubin and statistician Mark Hansen, Listening Post has been hailed as a seminal piece of electronic art. The San Jose Museum of Art is also host to the festivals grand central meeting point – the C4F3 Interactive Café. For more information, visit:

The Tech Museum of Innovation

The Tech Museum of Innovation will be a hub of activity during the ZeroOne Festival. This event complements the mission of The Tech: to inspire the innovator in everyone. Festival visitors will be inspired by The Tech’s interactive exhibits and programs showcasing the impact of technology on how we live, work, play and learn. The Tech features an IMAX theater, an upscale cafe, and a retail store featuring books, gifts, and only-in-Silicon Valley items. During the Festival, The Tech Museum will be headquarters for “99 Red Balloons,” a fun and highly interactive experience that combines mobile cinema and gaming. Other installations will be located throughout the museum. A series of artist discussions are scheduled in our New Venture Hall. The Tech Museum of Innovation welcomes ZeroOne to downtown San Jose!

ZeroOne: The Art and Technology Network

The ZeroOne: The Art and Technology Network is an independent nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to conduct a biennial festival that will offer attendees compelling experiences made possible at the intersection of art and digital culture. ZeroOne is the producing organization for ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge and the 13th International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA2006). The ZeroOne San Jose Festival will transform San Jose into the North American epicenter for the intersection of art and digital culture by showcasing the world’s most innovative contemporary artists. ZeroOne San Jose is artists making art and using technology as a tool to do so. It is not technology for technology’s sake. ZeroOne San Jose is a multi-dimensional, startling and brilliant audience event - with exhibits, live cinema, performances, workshops, and youth activities. All are one-of-a-kind, many never-before, only-here experiences.
