Community Networked Tales: Stories and Place of a Dublin

Valentina Nisi

Valentina is a researcher and media artist working on the overlapping possibilities of cinematic narratives and place, enabled by mobile wireless technologies. Her fascination lies in the poetic potential of bringing stories out into real space and merging architecture, environment and landscape with the narrative experience. She is finishing her Doctoral thesis on "Place based narratives" describing her interactive location based installations (Hopstory and the Media Portrait of the Liberties). Valentina is currently attending the Binger Film Lab in Amsterdam writing her first film script for a feature film inspired by the Irish legend of the seal women. The script is developed for traditional cinema but bearing in mind possible adaptations of the content for mobile technologies. She is also working freelance in collaboration with Virtueel Platform (The Virtual Platform is a network for policy and cooperation in the field of new media and 'living culture' in the Netherlands) delivering location bases workshops in Amsterdam and consulting on "Location Based" cultural projects. From September 2004 to February 2006 she has been a Researcher in the Distributed Systems Group, at the Computer Science Department of Trinity College, Dublin. From November 2000 through August 2004 she worked at MediaLabEurope, the MIT MediaLab research partner in Dublin, with Glorianna Davenport in the Storynetworks group, investigating the potential of new technologies in designing and developing location based cinematic story experiences. Her work has been presented and published in different festivals and conferences both in Ireland and internationally.
