Alejandro Jaimes-Larrarte is a Colombian artist and research scientist. In his artwork, he uses multiple media (photography, video, film, multimedia, and performance) to explore issues related to cultural differences, similarities, and cultural awareness. His technical work focuses on creating new human-centered approaches for computer understanding of multimedia content and human-computer interaction. His artwork has been exhibited internationally, in the U.S.A., Switzerland, Chile, Japan, and Colombia. He is the founder, co-organizer, and co-curator of the ACM Multimedia Interactive Arts program, founder and co-organizer of the Workshop on Technology for Education in Developing Countries, and a grand jury member of the World Summit Award. He has held summer research positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Siemens, and IBM (TJ Watson and Tokyo Research Laboratories). He has worked in Computer Vision since 1992, and has recently organized special sessions and given courses at the most important international conferences in Computer Vision and Multimedia on topics such as `Interfaces for Remote Collaboration,’ `Novel Techniques for browsing in Large Multimedia Collections’, and `Human-Centered Computer Vision/Multimedia’. He serves in the committees of several major conferences (ICME, ICIP, CIVR, etc.), and his work has led to over 40 publications in international conferences and journals, as well as to numerous patents and contributions to the new MPEG-7 standard. Dr. Jaimes received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2003) from Columbia University in New York City, where he also studied photography.
