Ethermapping

Zita Joyce is currently completing a PhD in media studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her research explores the radio spectrum, with a special interest in artistic uses of radio technologies, both in traditional and new media. As a member of ((ethermap with Adam Willetts, Zita has organized a number of events relating to radio and sound, including the Radio Kiosk experimental compilation station in the kiosk public art space, and Trambience, an ongoing series of mobile sound performances on a restored wooden tram in Christchurch, New Zealand. With ((ethermap and r a d i o q u a l i a, Zita was one of organizers of the re:mote Auckland festival, and a contributor to re:mote events in Saskatchewan and Paris. Zita’s doctoral research and the Ethermapping project developed out of workshops hosted by the Centre for New Media Culture RIX-C in Riga, Latvia, in 2001 and 2003, and Zita will be presenting a paper at RIX-C’s ‘Waves’ festival in August, 2006. Ethermapping was launched at the Aotearoa Digital Arts symposium in December, 2005, and shown in an early form in the exhibition “From mini-FM to hacktivists: a guide to art and activism,” curated by Mercedes Vicente at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand.
