http://isea2006.sjsu.edu/images/artwork/networkrockers.jpg "Rock My Chair" is an interactive installation consisting of two sets of four rocking chairs. The chairs emit different parts of a melody according to their being rocked. People sitting near each other are able to create different harmonies and rhythms encouraging communication and play.

Rock My Chair” is based on “Side by Side,” a project created by one of the Motohoho members Rikayo Horimizu. The new version uses a network protocol for communication allowing rocking chairs to be linked both locally and remotely. One set of four chairs would be in the museum cafe while the other set would either be in another location in the museum (a reading room?) or in another public or semi-public place in San Jose or in one of San Jose’s seven sister-cities located around the world. Each of the of four chairs has a partner chair in the other set. When a person sits down and starts rocking, a tone is emitted both locally and from the partner chair, which will also start to rock. When someone sits down in the empty chair “B” that is rocking they will feel the movement of the person in chair “A” through a swinging pendulum installed inside of the chair as well as hear the sound generated by chair “A”, if chair “B” is rocked sound is generated which will be heard at both chairs. People in remote locations can communicate through the creation of sound environments and songs together.
